Founded in 1859, it is not only one of the oldest botanical gardens in the United States, but a National Historic Landmark as well. It draws over 750,000 visitors each year to experience the vast range of ecosystems and animal species which it houses, and to take part in the Missouri Botanical Garden’s mission: ‘to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment’ and ‘to preserve and enrich life.’
The Missouri Botanical Garden holds a number of incredible attractions in which visitors may take delight, from a 14-acre Japanese strolling garden to the impressive Climatron Conservatory. The Japanese garden – named Seiwa-en, which means ‘pure, clear harmony and peace’ – is the largest Japanese garden in the Western hemisphere. It includes a 4-acre lake strewn with beautiful bridges and waterfalls, and is full of native Japanese cherry blossom trees, lotus flowers and peonies. Visitors can even feed the gorgeous Koi fish which swim in the lake and surrounding pools.
The Climatron Conservatory, a half-acre greenhouse dome, has become a famous symbol of the Missouri Botanical Garden.

As deputy secretary of defense in 2003, Paul Wolfowitz pushed President Bush to invade Iraq. “It is well worth celebrating the end of combat operations,” he wrote this week, and credits the war with creating a U.S. ally in the Middle East. U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta, says Mr. Bush’s January 2007 surge “has allowed our troops to return victoriously.” New York Times columnist David Brooks says, “After the disaster of the first few years, nation building, much derided, has been a success” in Iraq.
Nation-building was not our goal in Iraq. Destroying weapons of mass destruction was. The troops have not returned “victoriously” because there were no such weapons, just as there was no link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11, the Bush adminstration’s other spurious goal. It’s too soon to count Iraq, with no government, no proof of sustained military capability and leaders who lean toward Iran, as a U.S. ally.
In his speech on the war Tuesday night, President Obama said “no one can doubt President Bush’s support for our troops, or his love of country and commitment to our security.” It is time, Mr. Obama said, to “turn the page” and end the contentious argument over how America got into the war. So much for those who say President Obama blames Mr. Bush for everything.
Turning the page on the rancor is fine. Mischaracterizing the history written on those pages is not, particularly since Afghanistan figures prominently on the new pages. This is not the time to pretend that Iraq is an example of victorious, successful nation-building.
Iraq is an example of how not to go to war. Iraq also is an example of what can happen when the opposition — in this case Democrats who signed off on the resolution granting Mr. Bush power to attack Iraq — thinks only of what is politically popular. Republicans today say no to everything because that is where they see political advantage. Iraq was an example of saying yes for the wrong reasons. At $750 billion in direct costs, the Iraq war has cost almost as much as the stimulus. At least the stimulus didn’t cost more than 4,400 American killed and 30,000 wounded
